Belarus protestors use Telegram app to coordinate protest amid internet shutdown

Amid the shutdown of internet connectivity and cellular service in Belarus, the protestors have started using  Telegram application, which often runs despite internet outage.

Internet connectivity has been brought down since Sunday due to the widespread protest against President Alexander Lukashenko.

This app has become a very crucial tool which has helped the protestors to coordinate gatherings after strongman Lukashenko secured a landslide victory in August 9 presidential election. He has been in power since 1994 and this is his sixth term in office.

The president has been facing criticism for weak handling of the coronavirus pandemic. After the result was announced on August 9 about his sixth term, thousands of citizens came out to the streets in protest.
