The Australian government has pledged a grant of five million Australian dollars (3.7 million US dollars) to the national agency, Australian Associated Press. The government provided the grant on Friday as an assistance to cope with the Covid-19 crisis.

Australian Minister for Communication Paul Fletcher said that the Australian Associated Press is vital for media diversity and demonstrated its commitment for fact-based and unbiased journalism.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered unprecedented challenges for Australia’s regional media sector, with severe declines in advertising revenue threatening the sustainability of many news outlets,” Fetcher said.

AAP provides services to more than 250 regional news mastheads across Australia.
