Scotland becomes first country to provide sanitary products for free
Agency: Scottish authorities have passed the Period Products Bill. With this, the period products including tampons and pads will be free to anyone.
Following this, the country has become the first country to allow free and universal access to menstrual products in public.
The citizens say that this is a landmark victory for the global movement against period poverty.
The bill requires local authorities to ensure that period products are “generally obtainable free of cost”. The products has to be available in schools and also has to be placed in designated public places.
According to BBC, this bill was introduced by Labour MP Monica Lennon. She called the bill “practical and progressive”.
According to CNN, it is estimated that it would cost around £8.7 million to cover the cost for Scotland a year by 2022. The cost depends on the number of women who will take advantage of the free products.
