NC’s role prime in securing trade union rights-President Deuba

Kathmandu. Nepali Congress (NC) President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said the NC has been ever discharging crucial role in advancing the Trade Union Act, Labour Act and Social Security Fund in the country. Extending best wishes for happiness, peace and prosperity to all Nepalis on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, he stressed the need of resolving the problems facing by Nepali workers.
‘NC is active to protect and promote the rights and interests of the working class and to enable working environment, social security, fair wages and remuneration, professional integrity and respect by addressing their problems. Everyone should work to solve these problems,’ the message reads.
International Labour Day is celebrated on May 1 every year to commemorate the success of the struggle and movement of the workers demanding eight hours of work, eight hours of rest and eight hours of entertainment in Chicago, USA in 1886. After the establishment of Biratnagar Jute Mill Industry in 1993 BS in Nepal, the first historic movement of workers was held in Biratnagar in 2003 BS under the NC leadership demanding their rights and facilities.
The then autocratic regime had adopted a policy of ruthlessly suppressing that long movement. At the moment, several leaders, including popular leader BP Koirala, were arrested. The labour movement is considered the entry point of the epochal people’s revolution of 2007 BS for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. Therefore, NC and workers have always been associated with each other and have always been each other’s strengths, Deuba said in his message.
The first people’s elected government led by NC in 2016 BS had formulated laws related to factories and workers and guaranteed legal rights to the workers, he said, adding that the NC had for the first time adopted the policy of liberal economy with social justice for the advancement of Nepal’s labour market.
President Deuba has expressed his best wishes for the happiness, peace and prosperity of the workers and the working class, believing that this historic day will add new energy and enthusiasm among all. RSS
