Newar community celebrates Yomari Punhi

Newar Community is celebrating Yomari Punhi today. This is one of the major festivals of the community.

The community celebrates this festivals by enjoying a special cuisine named ‘Yomari’. Yomari is a steamed dumpling consisting of an external covering of rice flour stuffed with chaku and sesame seed.

The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of every December.  It is said that Yomari has been derived from two Nepal Bhasa words, “ya” meaning “to like” and “mari” meaning “delicacy”. So, it means that this delicacy is very popular.

The community worships Goddess Annapurna on this day. Annapurna is the goddess of grains.

The people believe that Yomari Punhi brings them wealth, health and prosperity.
