Bangladesh allows death penalty for rape conviction
Bangladesh government is planning to introduce death penalty for rape cases.
According to BBC, Law Minister Anisul Haq said that they would issue an ordinance on Tuesday making it law.
The minister took this decision following a widespread outrage in Bangladesh after footage of gang assault of A 37-year-old women went viral in social media.
Only this year, around 1,000 rape cases have already been reported, according to activist.
According to human rights activists, many cases have not been reported and also the conviction rate are very less.
After the video went viral, the eight man who gang raped the women were arrested. An investigationof Bangladesh’s National Human Rights Commission found that the women was assaulted in southeastern district of Noakhalim.
There was also a recent case where a women was gang raped in a hostel at northern district of Sylhet.
